World Series of Poker - What ESPN Missed

The World Series of Poker for 2009 has 56 out of 57 events completed with the final table for the Main Event still to finish up. ESPN has published their schedule and has plans to only show 2 of these events along with two other special events that were held which are the Ante Up For Africa Celebrity Charity Event and the WSOP Champions Invitational. Actually it’s a shame, because so many new records were established, broken and surpassed in those remaining events and many around the planet will not know of them because they will not be televised. This article will cover a few significant moments of the remaining events so that the efforts of these players will not be forgotten.

One of the most outstanding accomplishments was the successful title defense of player Thang Luu when he won the 2009 WSOP gold bracelet in Event #3 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better, which was the largest live Omaha High-Low Split tournament in history. Luu won his first bracelet in 2008 by taking Event 6 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better. Furthermore, Luu managed to finish second in this same event in 2007. This player was so dominate in the 2009 event that on Day 1 he was the chip leader, Day 2 he was second in chips and Day 3 saw him go into the final table as the chip leader and come out champion. Luu has now finished second, first and first in the same event over three consecutive years. In a very unusual spectacle, many players playing in cash games and other tournaments actually stopped, stood, and applauded Luu’s incredible exploit when he won in 2009. Many felt that Luu’s performance was one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of the game.

Jeff Lisandro was named Player of the Year at the WSOP, but how he got there won’t be seen on ESPN. He did so by winning 3 gold bracelets in Event #16 Seven Card Stud, Event #37 Championship Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better and Event #44 Seven Card Razz. This heralds 4 gold bracelets to Lisandro’s credit. Before he won his first WSOP title in 2007, he was at the top of lists everywhere as one of the best players never to have won a gold bracelet. The WSOP commented that these victories have further sealed his reputation as one of the top Seven-Card Stud players anywhere on the planet.

Phil Ivey earned one of the nine seats at the Main Event final table this year out of a field of 6,494 players. But he also won two more bracelets by capturing Event #8 2-7 Draw Lowball No Limit and Event #25 Omaha/Seven Card Stud Hi-Low-8 or Better. He now owns a total of seven gold bracelets at the age of 32. Ivey is one of the best known and most respected players period. He is one of the rare few players who excels at both tournaments and cash games. When Ivey won Event #25, admirers and fans were 10 deep around the table he was seated at.

Other tales of epic proportions include David Bach who won the prestigious Event #49 Championship H.O.R.S.E. that has a $50,000 entry fee. Timing in at 18 hours and 44 minutes, Event #49 was the second longest final table (time duration) in WSOP history with 480 hands dealt. The WSOP commented that while the Main Event remains the undisputed global championship title, in some respects the H.O.R.S.E. title is even more prestigious as seen by the top names in the game. Most highly successful players acknowledge the winner of this event as the year’s best ‘all around’ tournament player.

Angel Guillen who won his first bracelet in Event #32 No-Limit Hold’em, became only the second Mexican national to win a WSOP gold bracelet. Freddie Ellis who received his first bracelet by winning Event #6 Championship Seven Card Stud, became the fifth African-American in WSOP history to win a gold bracelet. This was also Freddie’s first time ever playing in an WSOP event. Greg Mueller won both Event #50 Limit Hold’em Shootout and Event #33 Limit Hold’em Championship. The WSOP felt that this victory reaffirmed his status as currently the best limit tournament player across the globe.

The all-time attendance record for 2008 which was 58,720 was smashed in 2009 by an additional 2,155 entrants. The total prize pool in 2009 grew beyond $174 million and for only the 2nd time in WSOP history, everyone who made the Main Event final table will win $1 million or more. Many historic achievements were made, but in retrospect praise should go to each of the 60,875 players who entered the 57 events held because they were the ones who contributed to making these moments possible.

How Vampires Because Sexual, Powerful Beings

The nineteenth century was the era of the vampire. No longer were vampires creepy, ghoulish, dirty beasts to be feared and loathed. Vampires adopted a fresh persona, one of charm, sexuality, and power. Here’s a quick look at three works of vampire fiction that contributed to today’s vampire mania.

Authored in 1819, this story is considered the foundation of the contemporary amorous vampire. A young Englishman named Aubrey crosses paths Lord Ruthven, a new arrival to London society and a person of unknown ancestry. Aubrey and Ruthven begin traveling southern Europe. Along their journey, there are more than a few vampire attacks. Aubrey doesn’t put it together at first. Marauders attack the pair during their trip and Ruthven is gravely wounded. Immediately before Ruthven dies, he forces Aubrey to promise that he will not tell anything about the pair’s travels for a week plus a day. Aubrey goes back to London where he comes across Ruthven again. He is fully alive and unharmed. Ruthven reminds Aubrey of the promise he made.

Ruthven turns his attention on Aubrey’s sister. Unable to tell his sister of Ruthven’s true nature, Aubrey has a mental collapse and dies. Lord Ruthven and the sister are married and Ruthven kills Aubrey’s sister during the wedding night. Ruthven escapes into the night and gets away.

Carmilla is a work that was released in 1872. A female vampire named Carmilla takes interest in a young woman named Laura. Laura and her father live in a magnificent home in the forests of Styria. Over time, Laura is mesmerized by Carmilla’s spell. Laura is at the same time repulsed and attracted to Carmilla, but she can’t oppose Carmilla.

Meanwhile, the countrymen in the outskirts are strangely falling ill. In the end Laura is saved. Carmilla is held at bay by General Spielsdorf, a person who has had previous confrontations with vampires.

Dracula details the story of Count Dracula, a vampire who falls in love with Mina Murray. Mina is promised to be married to Jonathan Harker, who is bothered by Mina’s infatuation with the esoteric Count. Jonathan obtains the assistance of Dr. Van Helsing. As one, the pair liberates Mina from Dracula’s grasp.

Modern academics concur that Dracula was heavily influenced by Carmilla. Penned in 1897 by Bram Stoker, the author created the most famous vampire of all time. There are numerous likenesses between Carmilla and Dracula. Mina, Dracula’s love interest, is similar to Laura, Carmilla’s love interest. Both families are of respected lineage. Van Helsing, the protagonist of Dracula, is comparable in many ways to General Spielsdorf, the protagonist of Carmilla. Without a doubt, Bram Stoker drew heavily upon the earlier work of Joseph Le Fanu.

More than any vampire character, Dracula created today’s image of what a vampire is. Dracula was charming, sexual, powerful, and blessed (and cursed) with eternal life.

Vampire stories of the nineteenth century to a large degree influenced how we view vampires today. The sexuality in , , and is overt. Never before were vampires portrayed as sexual and sensual creatures. These novels also present vampires in a human manner. Previously vampires had been portrayed as apparitions, spirits, or ghouls. Through the work of these authors, vampires have for all time been redefined and have become the focus of modern-day horror.

Vampire Diseases

Vampire stories are plentiful throughout European history. Some tales date back to the 12th century. It’s probable that these early tales of vampires were inspired by actual medical conditions.

There are assorted types of porphyria. Four of the types have symptoms of light aversion: Congenital Erythropoetic Porphyria (C.E.P.), Porphyria Cutanea Tarda (PCT), Erythropoietic Protoporphyria (EPP) or Protoporphyria, and Variegate Porphyria. Additional symptoms comprise of hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth), brown teeth, and red and sometimes bloody gums. These afflictions coincide with many vampire tales. Still, victims of porphyria don’t desire or drink blood.

Catalepsy is a sensory malady characterized by a decreased responsiveness to stimuli coupled with muscular rigidity. Persons with catalepsy don’t act in response to outside stimuli. They know about their surroundings but cannot speak or move. Episodes of catalepsy can last for a couple of minutes or for many hours or days.

In arduous cases, a subject that is suffering from a cataleptic attack will seem dead. Indications of life can solely be ascertained by means of modern medical instruments. Medieval patients with catalepsy may have been buried while still alive. Afterward, when patients recaptured their muscular control patients most definitely would have tried to free themselves from their grave site. Some vampire folklore describes noises coming from newly buried coffins. Later, when local villagers dug up these graves and unlocked them, scratch marks were discovered on the interior, leading townspeople to ascertain that vampires were attempting to free themselves from their graves.

Anemia is a condition characterized by blood that doesn’t have adequate red blood cells. Since red blood cells transfer oxygen all around the body, symptoms include vertigo, fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite. These symptoms are a result of the body’s organs not obtaining sufficient oxygen. These symptoms also resemble the symptoms of vampire victims in early myths. Anemia is a very common condition.

Bats and Wolves are both oftentimes connected with vampires. They are common carriers of the disease rabies. Rabies has symptoms that resemble vampirism. Hyper-sensitivity, a characteristic of rabies, might result in garlic or light aversion. Other symptoms entail becoming nocturnal due to atypical sleep patterns and over-sexuality. The disease is spread by biting, and patients with rabies are sometimes observed frothing at the mouth with blood.

Today’s medical science may translate some of our medieval vampire stories. Porphyria, anemia, rabies, and catalepsy are all explainable causes of early vampire tales. Villagers of the time who were deficient in medical education wouldn’t understand these diseases and their symptoms. The result may be the vampire folklore that spread across Europe in the middle ages.

Why Vampires Hold A Peculiar Charm

Vampires are a trendy group in our literary and cinematic lore. Vampires grab our imagination, draw us in, and make us believe in creatures outside of our normal lives. The vampire has morphed from a once maligned, often hated and feared, always undesirable being into a romantic being that represents eternal life and superhuman power.

In the middle ages, vampires were mostly apparitions. They were the embodiment of a soul not at rest. Usually a vampire would haunt or attack its previous family members. To halt these attacks, village folk would exhume the vampire remains, hammer a stake through the heart, and decapitate it. Sometimes the body was also burned. By staking the body it was thought a vampire could be pinned to its coffin and it couldn’t rise again. Cutting off the head was a method to separate the brain from the body. In severe cases, fire was used to totally destroy a vampire body.

Vampires were spotted only at night, so it was naturally assumed that vampires feared the sun. Additionally, darkness is equated with things evil whereas light, and the sun, represent good things. Vampires were never witnessed haunting their previous family members in the day time so the belief of aversion to sunlight was born.

In 1897 Bram Stoker released , the now timeless, revered, and iconic vampire tale. Stoker redefined the meaning of what a vampire was. The vampire took on personality, charm, and charisma. They were no longer mechanical ghosts bent on annihilating their former loved ones. Vampires represented power and eternal life. Stoker planted the seeds that would grow into an attraction with everything vampire.

Today there are an untold number of books about vampires. Vampire television shows such as , , , and found widespread success. Showing that vampire television shows aren’t dead, new shows like HBO’s continue to gain viewers.

Vampire movies are also frequent productions by Hollywood. In recent years we’ve seen the release of , the trilogy, , , and many more. Vampire groupies, fans, fanatics just can’t get enough of Hollywood vampire movies and Hollywood is quite willing to produce several new vampire films every year.

We love vampires. Until the vampire is permanently redefined again, it is unlikely that vampire popularity will decrease. We cannot help but become enthralled with idea of power, strength, immortality, and eternal life. Vampires represent these attributes. Vampires will always be a popular form of fiction.

A Short Biography Of Bram Stoker

Abraham Stoker (his friends called him Bram), was an Irish writer. Bram was born on November 8, 1847. Bram died on April 20, 1912. Bram came from a big Protestant family. He was the third born in a family of seven children.

Bram was born with sickness. He was bedridden, because of mysterious causes, until the age of seven. He then made a total recovery. He grew up strong and he was an athlete at Trinity College of Dublin. He graduated with full honors in 1870 and Bram received a degree in mathematics.

Despite Stoker’s science-based studies, Bram loved fiction. His early years of illness resulted in endless hours of fantasizing and contemplation. As a young adult he was attracted to the theater. After he married Florence Balcombe, Stoker and his new wife moved to London. Stoker then became the business and acting manager of the Lyceum Theater.

The couple only had a single child, Noel Thornley Stoker. Stoker worked at the Lyceum Theater for over 27 years. Bram’s wages wasn’t enough to support him and his family. As a result, he began writing to supplement his salary. Stoker spent quite a few years researching vampire folklore throughout Europe. He was fascinated with tales of vampires. He visited gothic sites such as Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire and the crypts of St. Michan’s Church in Dublin. These and other travels only further sparked Stoker’s curiosity with all things morbid.

Stoker would go on to author numerous fantasy, horror, and gothic novels including (1903), (1909), and (1911). But none would become as popular as Stoker’s 1897 work, . But Stoker made a major mistake after publishing . He didn’t follow copyright law and as a result, was put into the public domain in America from its initial publication.

was largely unappreciated during it’s time. The novel would not see mainstream-success for several decades. In 1922 Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau filmed an unauthorized adaptation of titled . After the release of , the popularity of Bram’s book increased quite a bit. Bram’s widow attempted to have the film banned, but because was in the public domain challenges to the movie failed.

Stoker died on April 20, 1912 in his home. Historians think that the reason for Bram’s death was due to tertiary syphilis. He suffered numerous strokes before passing away. Stoker was cremated and his remains put in an urn now on display at Golders Green Crematorium. Visitors who desire to visit the urn must be escorted to the room the urn is at, mainly due to fears of vandalism.

In 1914, two years after Bram’s death, his wife published the novella . It is widely speculated that this story was the original first chapter of Stoker’s .

Why Kids Are Complaining At School About Parents Insisting On Supervising Their Prom Party

Proms are a great way for the kids to socialize with their friends, to have some harmless romance and generally have a very good time. A lot of planning and re-planning goes on since long before when the prom actually begins.

But recently, kids complaining about their parents wanting to supervise their prom party have become a common sight. It is understandable that they will complain about this because they want their freedom and most are uncomfortable at the idea of their parents being present at the prom party.

There have been a lot of prom related mishaps recently and this has effected a kind of panic attack in parents. These incidents have also made parents more aware of what might be going on at prom parties. So they are now keener on supervising these prom parties to make sure that nothing goes wrong.

There are several dangers to leave these prom parties unsupervised and many parents are only just waking up to the full range of possibilities. There have been many cases of teenagers getting caught while driving under the influence of alcohol. There have been arrests based on suspected and evident substance abuse at the party. Drugs have become a major threat to the teens of our society. In addition to this, there have been reports sexual assault and many other such problems.

Hence, it is quite understandable that there are parents all over the country who are worried about the safety of their kids when they are going to the prom parties. This is why parents are insisting on supervising the prom parties.

What the parents can do to make this better:

This situation is always a bit tricky to handle with your kids because they will not take this lying down. They may easily see it as an invasion of their privacy, an effort to police them around and many other things. Please keep in mind that these teens are just entering their rebellious youth and you will need a lot of patience and small steps to get some cooperation out of them.

Start the talk by raising the issue of safety at the prom party in a soft manner, do not make them feel as if they are being interrogated. Tell them about the various news stories you have been hearing, explain to them that you are worried about them. But whatever you do, do not nag them or become repetitive. Instead approach it step by step at every opportune moment. Slowly break to them the proposal of ‘being’ at the prom party and immediately mention that you will only be on the fringes and will not interfere in what they are doing.

You have to listen to them as well, they need to be heard. Put their doubts at rest; make them feel close instead of pushing them away with harsh word. Instead of declaring that you will be there, ask them what they think. Discuss it openly with them and with enough effort you can preserve the peace at home and still supervise the prom party.
